Interview Type #4: The Starbucks Interview
When I first wrote the outline for this book, I didn’t include the Starbucks interview. As time has passed, I’ve received more and more questions from students who have upcoming coffee shop interviews. The Starbucks interview is not exclusive to Starbucks; it can be at any coffee shop, restaurant, or other public meeting place. Executives who work from home virtually or just want to take a break from the office conduct these interviews. I work from a coffee shop a majority of the day, and I’ve overheard several of these interviews. Recently a casting director was interviewing an intern at a local Coffee Bean and after greeting one another, the employer said, “So let’s get down to business: why you?” That’s a no-nonsense first question and a tough question. You must have an answer ready to explain why you are the best person for the position. In a public place, this question can seem even more overwhelming. You look around and see others in the coffee shop watching you and might feel embarrassed. Take a deep breath and remember, this is your time, your interview, and you owe it to yourself to give the best possible interview—even if it may seem like the entire coffee shop is listening and eagerly awaiting your responses.
In the style section below, I’ll address the proper attire for a coffee shop interview. The biggest thing to remember is to take the interview seriously and conduct yourself professionally. Yes, this interview is out of the office, but that doesn’t mean you should be any less amazing. When you walk into that coffee shop, you should turn heads. Everyone should already know that you are going to kill it and land the internship or job.
We know there are hundreds of Starbucks, Coffee Bean, and Dunkin Donuts locations across the country. Make sure that you confirm the location where the interview is and get the exact address and cross streets so you don’t end up at the coffee shop around the corner from your employer.
I like to show up early for the interview, purchase my own coffee, and select the least awkward place for us to sit. Normally this means a table in the corner, away from the main line and the crowds.
